Our Surgery Services
Soft Tissue Surgery
We offer a wide range of soft tissue surgeries such as abdominal exploration, foreign object removal, mass removals, C-sections, Gastropexies and much more. All soft tissue procedures are completed in a sterile environment with a board-certified surgeon and highly trained surgical and anesthesia support staff.
Orthopedic Surgery
We see a wide range of orthopedic cases that include but are not limited to, cranial cruciate ligament ruptures, fracture repairs, femoral head osteotomy, etc. We offer a vast array of medical and surgical options for orthopedic procedures and will work closely with you and your pet to assure comfort and success post-operatively. All orthopedic procedures are completed in a sterile environment with a board-certified surgeon, and highly trained surgical and anesthesia support staff.
Anesthesia
General anesthesia is of the upmost importance in getting your pet safely through any anesthetic procedure. We take a multi-modal anesthesia approach to each pet’s specific anesthesia needs, from pre-op to post-op recovery. With a telecardiology department on-site, we can more effectively provide a clearer picture of your pet’s health and specific anesthesia needs. All medical issues and pre-existing conditions will be taken into consideration when administering anesthesia during your pet’s surgical procedure and post-operative recovery. Our priority is making sure that your pet is safe and comfortable throughout the surgical process.
Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome
Brachycephalic pets often need extra attention and care. We offer upper airway surgical correction so your pet can live happier and breathe easier. English Bulldogs, French Bulldogs and Pugs (as well as others) often need soft-palate reduction and nares resection to help open up the airway and nasal passages. We provide both surgical corrections and a one-on-one recovery process for these special-needs patients.
Post-Operative Care
After your pet’s procedure we will provide you with detailed home care instructions so you and your pet can make a full and safe recovery at home. We know that taking care of a pet after surgery can be stressful and scary, we want to make sure that both you and your pet are comfortable and confident while recovering from their procedure. You will receive a complete set of discharge instructions as well as any pertinent informational videos (orthopedic procedures) at the time of discharge as well as an emailed copy prior to pick-up.
Post-Surgical Rehabilitation
Your pet’s recovery process is just as important as the surgical process itself. We work diligently with our pet parents and patients to assure that they are doing well and comfortable at home. We use a multi-modal pain management approach to post-op recovery and recognize that patients can benefit from short-term and long-term physical rehabilitation. We work closely with local rehabilitation centers in the DFW area to provide your pet with any post-surgical care as needed.
Client Information
Consultation Process:
- Flower Mound Veterinary surgical department is a referral-based practice, where our board-certified veterinary surgeon works in tandem with your primary veterinarian to diagnose, treat, and manage your pet’s illness or injury. Our surgeon also has 10 years of experience working with the veterinary general practice and specialty referral community (internal medicine, oncology, other) providing surgical options to complement advanced treatment plans. After your referring veterinarian fills out and sends your referral form to us we will collect your pet’s medical records and start the consultation process. You may call ahead or wait for our team to contact you (non-emergent referrals only) to set an appointment with the surgeon.
- On your consultation day you will check in with the client service representative to fill out any pertinent paperwork, so please arrive 5-10 minutes prior to your designated appointment time. Our dedicated support staff will get you and your pet into a consultation room where the surgeon will listen to your concerns and perform a full physical exam on your pet. Expect that your consultation with the surgeon and the team will take 45 minutes to one hour in order to provide enough time to explain treatments that have been recommended, perform any diagnostic testing needed prior to surgery and go over estimate of cost for your pet’s procedure. Please bring a thorough list of all of your pet’s medications, doses, and frequency with which they are given, to your consultation appointment, or you can email us the list at Surgery@fmves.com.
- The surgeon will review your pet’s surgical findings and procedure, and confirm the post-operative treatment plan including anticipated length of stay in the hospital. Once your consultation with the surgeon has concluded and you are ready to move forward with your procedure, the Client Service Representative, or a member of our staff will get your surgical appointment scheduled. We will provide you with your surgical paperwork to review, sign and return in preparation for surgery.
- If for any reason between surgery consult and your surgical procedure you have any questions, please give us a call so that we may answer your questions or concerns in full prior to your procedure day. You may call us directly at 469-464-2964 or email us at Surgery@fmves.com.
Day of Surgery:
- Today is your pet’s surgery day! We want to provide you and your pet a stress free and streamlined surgical check-in process.
- Expect to drop your pet off between 7:30am-8am so that we may answer any lingering questions or concerns and take care of the pre-surgical paperwork. Please bring all medication with you at check in, excluding any controlled prescription medications, as we will not be able to take those medications and will dispense as needed from our pharmacy stock. Your pet will be admitted into the hospital and any pre-surgical lab work and diagnostics will be performed prior to your pet’s procedure. Every patient has different medical needs and our pre-anesthetic testing is done with your specific pet’s health in mind.
- You will receive a call from one of our team members prior to your pet’s procedure as well as a call from the surgeon once your pet’s procedure has been completed and your pet is in recovery. Your pet’s general condition and the surgery performed will also factor into the length of time needed in hospital after surgery. Pets that need to stay overnight in our hospital will be monitored by our dedicated overnight ER/ICU team. Stable elective cases being discharged same day will receive a call from our team to set up a discharge time prior to 5pm the day of your pet’s procedure.
- Please be readily available, or close to your phone on the day of your pet’s procedure in case the surgery team needs to contact you. We ask that you provide two phone numbers the day of surgery, so that we may be able to contact you, or someone you deem fit, to make medical decisions should we call.
If signs are pointing to an emergency, don’t wait. Call us immediately or come in for triage.
